Mid-Century Canadian Northwest Coast Carved Thunderbird - Signed Alec Peters
An intriguing and characterful example of Canadian Northwest Coast carving, featuring a striking winged Thunderbird figure with a stylised human face and additional animal imagery.
The reverse is inscribed in pencil “Alec Peters” and “Musqueam”. The carving may be attributable to Alec “Tonto” Peters, a carver associated with the Musqueam community, whose Thunderbird works are documented in exhibition material from the 1960s.
The inscription makes this a particularly interesting piece. While the attribution has not been independently authenticated, it offers a fascinating possible connection to the mid-century carving traditions of Canada's Pacific Northwest.
A compact but distinctive piece of Canadian folk art, ideal for collectors of Americana, Northwest Coast art and unusual wooden carvings.
