1919 London to New York USA - Framed Antique Postal Ephemera & Americana Wall Art
A wonderfully characterful piece of early 20th-century ephemera, capturing a little moment in the history of transatlantic travel, trade and communication.
This original 1919 parcel wrapper documents the journey of a package of books from London to New York City. A richly layered composition of aged paper, handwritten annotations, vintage postage stamps, postal cancellations and customs labels, it has all the visual appeal of an intriguing historical collage.
The parcel originated from Bertram Dobell, bookseller of Charing Cross Road, London, and was addressed to a recipient in New York. Its original British Parcel Post customs declaration, King George V stamps and American postal markings remain wonderfully visible, including a New York Post Office label requesting a five-cent delivery charge.
Over a century old, the warm patina, faded ink and overlapping postal labels give this piece an authentic, almost archival quality. Beautifully presented in a substantial gilt-effect frame with a crisp white mount, it makes an unusual and eye-catching piece of wall art.
A lovely addition to an Americana-inspired interior, study, library or gallery wall – particularly appealing to collectors of vintage paper, typography and historical curiosities.
