A heavy brass lobe shaped dish with incised initials & date 1700
A Substantial Antique Brass Dish, Inscribed 1700
A wonderfully characterful piece of antique metalwork, with a distinctive lobed outline, deep sides and a beautifully weathered golden-brass surface.
This substantial dish has real presence. Its sculptural, undulating rim and shaped sides catch the light beautifully, revealing layers of warm brass tones, darker patination and the marks of age. It is surprisingly heavy in the hand and would make an eye-catching centrepiece on a console, coffee table or antique desk.
The upper-middle is incised with initials and the date 1700 - a fascinating detail that adds to its historical intrigue. Could it have been made to mark the arrival of the new century? The two initials invite us to ponder the identities of the people behind them, living in England during the reign of William III.
An unusual decorative antique for collectors of historic metalwork, or for an interior that calls for something with genuine character and a story to tell.
Inscribed 1700 | Antique lobed brass dish | Date of manufacture unconfirmed
