Antique American Magazine Poster, February Century, 1898 – Spanish-American War
An evocative piece of late-19th-century American graphic art: an original antique advertising poster promoting the February 1898 issue of The Century Magazine.
Printed in New York by H.A. Thomas & Wylie Litho. Co., the poster combines a striking illustration of Lieutenant Richmond Pearson Hobson looking out from Morro Castle with a portrait of Major General William R. Shafter. The magazine’s featured articles are listed below, including Hobson’s account of his journey and imprisonment, alongside stories on Arctic exploration, the Nile and Alexander the Great.
Its historical interest lies in its connection to the Spanish-American War of 1898. Hobson and his crew became prominent figures after their daring attempt to block Spanish ships in Santiago Harbor by sinking the Merrimac. Shafter was a senior American commander in the campaign.
A fascinating survivor from the age when illustrated magazines used bold, finely printed posters to attract readers - a distinctive addition to an Americana collection, a study or library, or a wall devoted to American military and publishing history.
